Lenguaje de programación Scala

The programming languages we use shape the way we think and how we solve pro-gramming issues. And when faced with new programming languages and paradigms we try to map them to the languages we know. I would discourage you from doing that when reading Scala in Action. Scala is a new programming language that brings myriad new ideas to the Java virtual machine platform. Scala is unique. It is a multi-paradigm programming language that combines both functional and object-oriented languages. It has its own set of best practices and idi-oms and by the end of this book what you have learned will also be helpful in other programming languages. Scala in Actionhas been updated to reflect the newest changes in Scala version 2.10.

Spring framework

The Spring Framework was created with a very specific goal in mind—to make developing JEE applications easier. Along the same lines, Spring in Action was written to make learning how to use Spring easier. My goal is not to give you a blow-byblow listing of Spring APIs. Instead, I hope to present the Spring Framework in a way that is most relevant to a JEE developer by providing practical code examples from real-world experiences. Since Spring is a modular framework, this book was written in the same way. I recognize that not all developers have the same needs. Some may want to learn the Spring Framework from the ground up, while others may want to pick and choose different topics and go at their own pace. That way, the book can act as a tool for learning Spring for the first time as well as a guide and reference for those wanting to dig deeper into specific features.

IronPython, programming

IronPython is a radical project for Microsoft. It is the first project to be released under their Ms-PL (Microsoft Public License) open source license. It is also a radically different language from the ones that Microsoft has traditionally promoted for the .NET framework. IronPython is an implementation of the popular programming language Python for .NET. Python is an open source, object-oriented, dynamically typed language in use by organizations like Google, NASA and Pixar. Python is a multi-paradigm language, and brings new possibilities to .NET programmers: not just the added flexibility of dynamic typing, but programming styles such as functional programming and metaprogramming. For Python programmers the powerful runtime, with its JIT compiler and huge range of .NET libraries, also presents new opportunities.

Welcome to the second edition of JUnit in Action! If you’ve picked up this book, we sus-pect you’re a Java developer who cares about the quality of software you produce. Per-haps you’ve worked with the previous versions of the JUnit framework in the past, perhaps you’ve worked with other testing frameworks, or perhaps this is your first step into the testing world. Whichever path has led you here, you’re probably interested in improving your software process and the quality of the software you write. The goal of this book is to give the basic foundation you need—and much more. The world of soft-ware testing consists of many projects that solve specific tasks, of testing different com-ponents and layers of your application. The central player in this world is the JUnit framework. Written by Erich Gamma and Kent Beck about a decade ago, this frame-work has become the de facto standard in Java testing. The latest 4.x versions of the JUnit framework are much more than a revision of the old 3.x JUnit framework. If you haven’t heard anything about the JUnit framework yet, you might expect, based on the name, to find a new release of that old proven framework. But this is not the case. Unlike the old version of JUnit, the 4.x versions introduce a new approach and rewrite of the whole framework. Hence the need for an up-to-date copy of the first edition.

It’s released under the Affero General Public License (AGPL) and is available in two versions: the original Java version, and the C# port, iTextSharp. These libraries make it possible for you to enhance applications with dynamic PDF solutions.

This book is written with the intermediate to advanced Java programmer in mind. We assume that you’re familiar with the basics of Java syntax and comfortable con- sidering design alternatives where there may not be a single choice that is supe- rior in all situations. Having some experience with developing graphical applications, whether in Java or any other language, will be helpful but isn’t necessary. We define all terms as they’re introduced and attempt to point out the purpose behind each widget as well as discuss the technical details of how to use it. However, this isn’t a book about user interface design, so we won’t attempt to cover the myriad details that go into assembling a compelling user experience out of the widgets we present. We assume that most readers have some experience with Swing, but such expe- rience isn’t necessary to fully enjoy this book. We attempt to draw comparisons to Swing where we feel that doing so imparts additional understanding for Swing vet- erans, but these comparisons are secondary to the main discussion of each topic. We have made sure you can understand every topic in this book without having programmed a single line of Swing code.

Ajax

Ajax technologies themselves are all client side, the differences extend all the way down to the server. This book is mainly about client-side programming, and most of the code examples that you’ll find in here are JavaScript. The principles of Ajax decouple the client from the server beautifully, and can be used with any server-side language. We’ve therefore got a broad audience to address and have opted to present our server-side code in a mixture of languages: PHP, Java, C#, and Visual Basic .NET. More importantly, though, we’ve tried to keep the server-side code relatively simple and implementation-agnostic, so that you can port it to whatever environment you choose. Where we do use language-specific features, we explain them in enough detail for those unfamiliar with that particular environment to figure out what we’re doing.

Spring framework

More than three years and two major versions of Spring have passed since the sec- ond edition was printed. Spring covers more ground than ever before and it would take several volumes to comprehensively cover the entire Spring portfolio. It’s not possible to cram everything there is to know about Spring into a single book. Since I couldn’t fit everything into one volume, I was choosy about what topics made it into this edition. I decided to focus on what I believe are the core Spring topics that most Spring developers should know. That’s not to say that the other topics aren’t important, but these are the essentials of Spring development.
