Building off the success of Windows 7, Microsoft embarked upon the boldest redesign of Windows since the introduction of the Start menu in Windows 95. The goal was to modernize the operating system. The result has been the most controversial release of Windows, primarily because of the new user interface. Called the “Metro” interface during development, the new Start screen replaces the classic Start menu and Start button. Some love it, some hate it with a passion. The second edition of Wastewater Microbiology incorporates the latest findings in a field covering a wide range of topics. During the past few years, we have witnessed significant advances in molecular biology, leading to the development of genetic probes, particularly the ribosomal RNA (rRNA) oligonucleotide probes, for the identification of wastewater microorganisms. The road is now open for a better identification of the microbial assemblages in domestic wastewater and their role in wastewater treatment.

Nanomaterials are of varying chemical complexity (bulk and surface), size, shape, and phase. Therefore, there exist large challenges in understanding the environmental health and safety of nanomaterials, and truly interdisciplinary efforts are needed. This book reflects the interdisciplinary nature of the research on the environmental and health impacts of nanoscience and nanotechnology. Chapter authors come from a variety of disciplines including chemical engineering, chemistry, civil and environmental engineering, environmental microbiology, geoscience, occupational and environmental health, pathology, pharmacology, and plant and soil science. As we enter a new millennium, the automotive industry is facing greater challenges than ever before in providing safer, more environmentally friendly, and more energy-efficient products to meet increasingly stringent demands of society. As a result, new technologies have continually been developed and introduced into its products. Accordingly, to better serve the changing needs of the educational and professional communities related to ground transportation technology, this third edition has been prepared. To improve competitiveness, shortening the product development cycle is of critical importance to vehicle manufacturers. Virtual prototyping is therefore widely adopted in the industry. To implement this process effectively, however, the development of reliable computer simulation models for vehicle performance evaluation is essential. For a realistic simulation of the handling behavior of road vehicles, a method referred to as the Magic Formula for characterizing tire behavior from test data is gaining increasingly wide acceptance.

It has been 36 years since the appearance of the first edition of this book, and 23 years since the second. Such intervals may be appropriate for a subject whose fundamental basis was completely established theoretically 134 years ago by Maxwell and experimentally 110 years ago by Hertz. Still, there are changes in emphasis and applications. This third edition attempts to address both without any significant increase in size. Inevitably, some topics present in the second edition had to be eliminated to make room for new material. One major omission is the chapter on plasma physics, although some pieces appear elsewhere. Read— ers who miss particular topics may, I hope, be able to avail themselves of the second edition.

Cuda programming

This book will be a valuable resource for anyone who wants to use GPUs for scientific and technical programming. It provides a comprehensive introduction to the CUDA programming interface and its usage. For a start, it describes the basics of parallel computing on heterogeneous architectures and introduces the features of CUDA. It then explains how CUDA programs are executed. CUDA exposes the execution and memory model to the programmer; as a result, the CUDA programmer has direct control of the massively parallel environment. In addition to giving details of the CUDA memory model, the text provides a wealth of information on how it can be utilized.
